KJV Reader’s Dictionary
Understanding Scripture in the Words God Preserved
The King James Bible uses many words and phrases that are unfamiliar to modern readers. This KJV Reader’s Dictionary was created to help families, students, and believers understand the language of Scripture without altering or paraphrasing the text itself. Each entry provides a plain definition and a supporting King James Version verse where the word appears, allowing Scripture to interpret Scripture.
A Note on Singular and Plural Pronouns:
In the King James Bible, pronouns are used with careful precision.
Thou / Thee / Thy / Thine are singular, referring to one person.
Ye / You / Your are plural, referring to more than one person.
This distinction helps readers understand who is being addressed in Scripture—whether God is speaking to an individual or to a group. Modern English no longer preserves this difference, but the King James Bible does so consistently and intentionally.
